Pancake Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Valentines....
Published on Feb 6, 2018 17:18

Good evening everyone..... a few things to share:

1) Some questions have been raised this year about the fact that Ash Wednesday coincides with Valentine’s Day (February 14th) … what does this mean in terms of school observances? Because of its' central importance in the Church calendar (as the beginning of the Lenten season), Ash Wednesday takes precedence over Valentine’s Day this year, meaning that we won’t be celebrating Valentine’s Day as we normally might at least not on February 14th! However, since the day before is Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras, it is an ideal date to transfer some of the Valentine’s Day festivities that would normally occur the following day. I think that this is a creative way to make sure that we can observe both days, while also keeping Ash Wednesday clear of conflicting celebrations especially those involving candy or food, since it is a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics.

The school staff have decided that school activities associated with Valentine's Day will be done on Feb. 13. Individual classes - particularly of our younger students - will share details with you regarding those activities.

2) Father Tad will be coming to St. Nicholas on Ash Wednesday to celebrate a paraliturgy and distribute Ashes.  If you would like to join us, the service is planned for 10:15am in our gymnasium.  Please ensure you are scent free (hairspray, perfume, strong detergent etc. - thank you for your continued support of the SMCDSB Scent Awareness Policy)

3) Shrove Tuesday - AKA 'Pancake Tuesday' - Parent Council is looking for volunteers to help with the cooking and distribution of the pancakes on Tuesday morning.  If you have some time to share with us, please contact the school.  As usual, please ensure that if you are volunteering that your Criminal Background Check is up to date and on file at the school.  Call the school and let Mrs. Barks know if you are available.  Thank you!

4) End of Year Fair - What a great opportunity for students and their families to get together to celebrate another successful year! This event is held in June. Last year, we were unable to celebrate this event as we did not have enough parent volunteers. Please, please consider volunteering some of your time to ensure that the St. Nicholas tradition of celebration can continue.  Please call the school and let Mrs. Barks know if you are available!  Thank you on behalf of Parent Council!!
